KT leads the essential environmental management to achieve environmental soundness.
In connection with a change from climate change to a period of climate crisis in which environment is an essential factor in management, we at KT have formulated Net Zero 2050, a new vision for environmental management. We will be in promotion of two goals, i.e. minimization of environmental impact by our business operation and maximization of environmental benefits from our services at the same time through positive use of our ABC (AI, BigData, Cloud) technologies to attain the objective of Net Zero (Carbon Neutrality) by 2050.
We will also continue to reduce GHGs, expand the use of renewable energy, and contribute to the country’s attainment of the goal Net-Zero.
Pursue minimizing environmental impact by KT and maximizing environmental benefit by KT at the same time
and reach a carbon-free company by 2020 by developing and providing innovative eco-friendly ICT services.
KT newly installed ‘Sustainable Management Committee’ in the BOD in April 2016, through which promotes strategic and capable environmental management activities. Also, the company has been improving company-wide execution via Environmental Management Committee under the committee. Environmental Management Committee runs 5 subcommittees including climate change response, energy efficiency, resource efficiency, operational excellence and environmental ICT services to effectively implement the 5 environmental management agendas presented by KT Environmental Management Policy. The committee meets periodically and plays a key role in discussing the environmental management agenda and establishing execution strategies from a companywide perspective.
We at KT are approaching environmental risks not on the level of mere removal of management risks, but based on the recognition of them as an essential and urgent task required for the future of mankind. We intend to reduce our carbon footprint by carrying out specific plans for company-wide GDGs reduction from long-term perspective. We are committed to eco-friendly management.
Today, the climate change is a mega trend to trigger environmental risks such as exhaustion of energy resources and shortage of water and poses a big threat to sustainable development of humanity. KT is actively responding to climate change by implementing a variety of activities and policies.
Energy costs continue to rise due to depletion of fossil fuels and regulations for GHGs and have serious impacts on cost side of businesses. The company is improving energy efficiency and expanding energy diversification policies into more use of new and renewable energy.
Natural resources on earth are limited, and cost of buying natural resources and raw materials is expected to rise gradually. KT has established and run a management and assessment system for improving resource efficiency to preserve resources and cut cost.
KT tracks, gathers, analyzes and monitors environmental performance of all operations to minimize possible negative environmental impact on the entire operation process and value chain, and also makes an effort to spread environmental management to the entire value chain through its supply chain efficiency assessment.
The company is making a sustainable home for humanity by actively improving the environment through development of eco-friendly technology and provision of innovative services and realizing the balance between nature and humanity and between environmental protection and economic development.
In order to raise awareness on environment protection, we are set to introduce our eco-friendly campaign called JI-U-GAE.
The name originates from the initial characters in Korean referring to ‘Earth’ (JI), ‘Us’ (U), and ‘Individual’ (GAE); referring to little daily routines or activities that we can do to protect the environment.
As the name implies, the campaign is premised on carbon footprint reduction through little daily contributions that everyone is readily able to do to protect our limited natural resources.
The Reusable Cup Campaign to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated in our office buildings is currently well underway.
We provide reusable cups in collaboration with social enterprises and have set up collection boxes in our office buildings at Gwanghwamun, Bundang, and Songpa, so that the reusable cups can be collected and cleaned every day.
With this circulation process, over 20,000 disposable cups that used to be discarded at our company pantries and offices every month could be replaced with the reusable ones.
These small contributions by our workers are expected to reduce plastic waste and contribute to carbon reduction.
Even emails accumulated in a mailbox consumes electricity as they require storage space to be created in the server of the data center.
In order to cut down electricity consumption and reduce GHG emissions, we recommend our workers to delete unnecessary emails via weekly JI-U-GAE newsletter.
We will continue to advance various eco-friendly initiatives and spare no effort until eco-friendliness becomes synonymous with corporate culture.
